Fire Cider Recipe

Writer's picture: Fran HuntFran Hunt

Autumn equinox or Mabon has just passed. Cold and flu season is upon us! Fire cider is one of my favourite natural, holistic ways to boost your immune system. It combines warming ingredients that do wonders for your health. Even chopping and preparing this remedy clears your sinuses! And makes you cry!

The ingredients are full of benefits.

  • Apple cider vinegar — it's antimicrobial, it helps with digestion and has loads of other benefits.

  • Horseradish — helps alleviate headaches and clear sinus congestion.

  • Onion & garlic — antimicrobial and antibacterial properties for fighting germs

  • Ginger — helps with digestion & nausea.

  • Cayenne Pepper — helps move blood in your body, it is a circulatory stimulant. It's a remarkable healer. Not to be confused with chilli power which comes from the chilli family, cayenne comes from the capsicum family.

  • Honey — honey is the wonderful healer, soothing, great for coughs. It's rich in antioxidants. Make sure you use raw honey. (Honey can be left out for a vegan version)

Recipe

Prep Time: 30 mins

Steep time: 1 month

Amount: 1 litre

Ingredients

1/2 cup fresh horseradish, grated

1 onion, chopped

1/2 cup fresh ginger root, grated

2 fresh chillies, chopped

1 bulb of garlic, cloves chopped

1 lemon, zest & juice

2 tbsp fresh rosemary

2tbsp turmeric root, chopped

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper powder

1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground

1 litre unfiltered apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup raw honey

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients except the vinegar and honey in a 1.5 litre jar.

  • Pour the apple cider vinegar into the jar. Ensure it completely covers the other ingredients to avoid spoilage.

  • If you're using a jar with a metal lid, place a piece of parchment paper under the lid to avoid the vinegar coming into contact with the metal.

  • Shake the jar well to combine. Store in a cool, dark place for 1 month. Shake the jar daily.

  • After a month, strain through a cheesecloth transferring the infused vinegar into a clean jar. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

  • Add the honey and stir until combined. Taste and add more honey if required.

  • Store in a sealed container in the fridge or a dark spot.

  • Take 2tbsp daily through autumn and winter. If you have the start of a virus, cold or flu you can take a shot at the onset of symptoms and continue until well again. If it's too strong for your taste, you can dilute with water.
